When I started the month of December I had a goal of making $600. I had no idea I would double last month’s blog income and exceed $1000. In less than a month of blogging being my only job I managed to double my income.

I have lots to share with you about this month and everything that I did that lead to a huge increase in traffic. While in past income reports I focused very little about the what I did to get the income, in this post I’m sharing all sorts of details.

Starting a Blog

Before we get into the details and the income report itself. I want to share my blog story with you. I had started blogs before and really enjoyed working on them. However, as life always does I got busy and suddenly the blog was taking a back seat. At this time, both blogs were considered hobbies.

It wasn’t until after giving birth to my son, Lucas, that I started researching blogging for the purpose of making money. We looked into several options. Niche blogging, blogging about blogging, and a few others. Then I found my passion.

What you see here on Mommy is a Wino is exactly my passion. It’s a little bit of everything but revolves around being an organized work at home parent. I love writing about being a parent and finding affordable solutions to all things home and family.

I started writing and before I knew it I had over 100 posts. I enjoy every aspect of blogging. The writing, marketing, networking, and business ends of it. That’s when I decided it was time for me to go full time blogger. No more part time jobs, just blogging as my profession.

Check out my post on How to Start a Blog for an in depth guide to everything it actually takes to start a blog.

What Was December Like?

This month has been an insanely busy month for me. Quite honestly, I felt like I was slacking on my blog work for most of the month. An out of state move and finishing up work from my side gigs meant I didn’t have a lot of time to focus on some of the crucial parts of blogging.

I didn’t send a lot of emails, I marketed only on Pinterest, and I barely wrote any content. I can only imagine what my traffic would have been like had I actually done more marketing via social media and my email list.

However, my traffic rose and rose and rose. It has not stopped climbing even as I write this I am still breaking personal records. I don’t have just one or two posts going viral either. My traffic has been spread out over 7 different posts. This was due to a massive change in how I was handling Pinterest.

Changing Up My Pinterest Strategy

Back in October I purchased an ebook by Carly at Mommy On Purpose called Pinteresting Strategies. In this book Carly explains how to do manual pinning effectively. She explains how Pinterest works, what techniques work best, and everything else you need to know about Pinterest.

While I had a general grasp on Pinterest and how to use it I felt like I was missing some sort of vital information. I absolutely was.

The biggest part I missed when it came to Pinterest was the idea that everything about my pin was being looked at when it came to Pinterest SEO. My Pinterest images were not helping Pinterest in figuring out what my pin was about. My keywords were not set for Pinterest SEO.

Additionally, the boards I was pinning too were doing nothing to help Pinterest decide where my pins should go and what search terms they should show up for. Upon finally getting an understanding of how Pinterest looks at pins I started being far more strategic in creating my Pinterest images.

I have purchased my fair share of ebooks and this was the first ebook that I felt actually taught me exactly what I needed to know in order to make Pinterest work for me. Additionally, it didn’t cost an arm and a leg to purchase. If you want to use Pinterest as part of your marketing plan for your blog or business you need Pinteresting Strategies.

Traffic Numbers

So in November I had 36,564 Pageviews. It was similar to other months I had. I did notice a little extra spike in traffic at the end of the month but again I thought it was just end of the month and black friday traffic. Except the trend continued into December and I saw this growth pattern start getting larger and larger throughout the whole month.

In December I had 72,869 pageviews. That means I almost doubled my traffic in less than one month. Additionally, my pinterest numbers and email list gained quite a bit of traffic.

Alright, it’s the moment you’ve been waiting for. The actual numbers of what I earned in December 2017.

I currently only have two ways in which I monetize my blog. I use Mediavine for my Ad Management and I am an affiliate for Amazon, Etsy, Target, and more. While this may change in the future as I look for ways to diversify my income for now it’s working pretty well.

November’s Total Income: $469.54

December Income:

  • Mediavine: $947.54
  • Affiliate: $55.17

Total Income: $1002.71

That’s right I more than doubled my blog income in one month, thanks in large part to Pinteresting Strategies by Carly at Mommy on Purpose.

What Next Month Holds

Now that the holidays and the move is done I have huge plans for January. Every single aspect of my blog will be touched this month.

First, I am focusing highly on creating more content. Content is king and without a lot of content you have no reason for people to stick around on your blog. The next few months will be highly focused on content.

Next, I am upping my social media marketing by scheduling posts on Facebook, tweeting daily, and posting to Instagram daily. While I am sticking to the schedule that works for Pinterest I am going to be checking up on some pins that may need keyword updating or even possible a new pin image or two.

Finally, I am getting extremely serious about utilizing my email list. I will be writing to my list every week with information that only my list gets. Additionally, I will be marketing to them by featuring some of my blog posts as well.

Income Reports

Final Thoughts

When I first started blogging I never thought I would fall in love with it as much as I have. It has been an extremely rewarding experience and I look forward to doing this for a long period of time.
